2024 Plans for the Pottery

2024 will be the final year for Nan Rothwell Pottery.  I set up my first studio in the spring of 1973, and fifty years of making and selling pots has been a good run. I plan to keep playing with clay, but while I am not sure what my studio future will look like, it won’t include making things to sell.  We have a huge cache of pots on hand at the moment – most of them are for sale on my Online Store. I also have work at the Crozet Artisans Depot; at Cville Arts; at Noon Whistle Pottery; and at the Alderson Gallery.

I am not saying I will never make another functional pot, just that I will not make any more for sale.  But meanwhile, during 2024, I’ll take part in three Shows:
The RVACLAY tour in Richmond, Virginia on June 1 & 2
The Virginia Clay Festival in Stanardsville, Virginia on September 21 & 22
The Artisans Studio Tour in my Charlottesville, Virginia studio on November 9 & 10

Two Workshops at City Clay in March 2023

I’m offering two Saturday workshops at City Clay in Charlottesville, Virginia.  Registration and further details are linked below to the City Clay Website.

Making Wheel-thrown Chickens and Fish
Saturday, March 4, 2023
9:30 am – 4:00 pm

If you can throw a simple bowl, then you can throw a chicken or a fish. We’ll start by making wheel-thrown bowls, then fold them into basic forms that can transform into chickens, fish, or whatever other critter you can envision. This is a one-day, hands-on workshop focused on having fun.  Even if you aren’t able to throw a small bowl, you can still join us.  I’ll be happy to make the basic shape for you, since the fun part happens next.

Take Your Throwing to the Next Level
Saturday, March 11, 2023
9:30 am – 4:00 pm

Could your throwing use a tune-up? Are you stuck in the two-pound-bowl range and not sure how to work larger? Do you want to create a complex form but don’t know how to begin?  Or maybe you could use input on your general throwing technique?  This workshop is just what you need!  Depending on participants’ goals, our projects might include two-part vases, larger bowls, or creating faceted or textured pieces.

Latest Firing Results

Here are some of the pots from yesterday morning’s kiln opening – my first glaze firing since last fall. Since the kiln shed is unheated, and all the glazes freeze, we wait until spring to recondition them. It was a good firing! I have two more kiln’s worth of pots waiting to be
glazed and fired next week

Spring Workshops at City Clay and online at TeachinArt.com

This spring, I’m offering two hands-on workshops at City Clay in Charlottesville, VA.  After a long Covid-induced break, I’m excited by the prospect!  The first will be on Throwing  Chickens and Fish, and the second on Creating Patterns and Texture on Thrown Pots.  Look for more details on the Workshops Page of this site.   Here are the kinds of things we’ll be making:

Chickens, fish and whatever other critters you can think of

Playing with surface pattern and design

In other workshop news, we’ve switched the scheduling model for my online course through TeachinArt.com – Take Your Throwing to the Next Level.  The course used to run in specific terms, but now we’re offering it on demand, so you can start a session whenever you’re ready.  You can read more about the course and see a preview of what we cover here on the TeachinArt site.

Partnering with the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank – October 15 to November 14

This Holiday season, you can combine gift-buying for friends and family with support for the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank.  From October 15 to November 14, a portion of all sales from either of my online stores will support BRAFB. If we ship directly to your gift recipients, the enclosed gift card will mention that part of your purchase supports the Food Bank. You can see my latest pots at my Square Store or NEW Etsy Store.

If your Holiday gift plans don’t include buying pottery, please consider making a straight-up donation at https://www.brafb.org/pottery/. The Blue Ridge Area Food Bank serves 25 counties and 8 cities, providing nutritious food to 118,300 people on average each month. Their distribution network includes more than 200 community partners – food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, schools, churches and other non-profit groups. With each dollar they collect, they can feed four people.

Virginia Clay Festival on September 18 & 19, 2021

I’m looking forward to next weekend’s Virginia Clay Festival in Stanardsville, VA.  The Festival is open 10 am to 5 pm on September 18 & 19.  I’ll be doing a demo on making wheel-thrown  chickens and fish on Sunday at 1 pm.

Here are some pots from my two recent firings that I will have at the Festival.  The sixth photo includes Lauren, my wonderful new marketing manager, who will be at the Festival with me.

Lauren has created a new Etsy Shop for my pots, plus she is managing my existing Square Online Store.  Now that she is managing that entire part of my process, I am free to do the fun stuff = making, glazing and firing pots.  It feels like pottery heaven!

I’ve pulled back from in-person teaching for now – at least until Covid subsides.  But TeachinArt is still offering my Online Course – Take Your Throwing to the Next Level.  My contact with TeachinArt students is an ongoing pleasure.
